Trailer Brake Assembly Installation to Ensure Correct Side of Trailer

Question:

What happens if you put the right brakes on the left side?

If you install the brakes on the opposite side, they will not work to the same capacity but you will still get some braking. You will want to make sure you correct the problem so that you can get correct braking and not prematurely wear down your brake shoes and magnet.

The brake magnets will move the brake shoes against the inner wall of the drums. This is a mechanical movement that puts the correct pressure of the smaller brake shoe (on front side) and larger brake shoe (on back side). I've attached a photo of the Dexter brake assemblies that have that gray adjuster that is easier to see than some other assemblies, but they all have it.

When you order a kit with both assemblies, they will be labeled so you put the left brake assembly on the driver's side and the right brake assembly on the passenger's side.
