Recommended Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier and Bag for 2004 Acura MDX

Question:

I own a Acura MDX and was interested in purchasing a hitch basket with cargo bag for a road trip. How do I figure out which one would be the best fit for my vehicle and maximizing storage?

Using a hitch-mounted carrier and bag combination is a great option for transporting cargo that doesn't easily fit inside your vehicle.

In order to mount a carrier, you will first need a trailer hitch. If you don't already have one installed, I recommend the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13328. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your Acura MDX and it will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening for hitch-mounted accessories and it features a 350 pound tongue weight capacity.

I have attached the written installation instructions on this hitch that you can take a look at.

From here, it is just a matter of choosing a carrier that is large enough for what you are planning on loading into it. You will also want to make sure the carrier is compatible with the 2 inch receiver on the above mentioned hitch. I recommend taking a look at the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18151. This is a really nice, basket-style carrier that features inside (usable) dimensions of 60-1/2 inches wide, 23-3/4 inches deep, and 5-1/2 inches tall. Its mesh floor is easy to clean and the folding design will let you tilt up the carrier towards the vehicle when not in use. I do recommend adding a hitch lock like the Anti-Rattle Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 63232 to secure the carrier to your MDX.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this carrier so you can get a closer look at all of its features.

Then, for a cargo bag that will work perfectly with this carrier, I recommend the etrailer Cargo Bag # 988501. This is a water-resistant, PVC-coated bag that can hold 20 cubic feet of gear and includes 6 tie-down straps with buckles that will secure it to the carrier. I have again attached a video demonstration on this product that you can check out.
