Recommended Weight Distribution System Best For Sway Control

Question:

Have an open 18’ car hauler with tandem axles at 1,850 lbs hauling a car at 3,478 lbs. What WD Sway equipment would you recommend for hauling cross country? Would a Weigh Safe ball be worth the investment?

For your weight distribution system with sway control, I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control # RP66083. This system is the best fit for your combination as well as the best option for sway control. This system is the only one that actively fights sway by using hot rolled spring bars and dual cams to keep the trailer aligned with your truck. The cams are overcome on turns and then automatically reestablish connection as you straighten back out for best function. I've attached videos to assist.

I used the 10-15% estimated tongue weight to give you this system. You could go bigger in tongue weight capacity, but it would make it a rough ride if you ever tow empty. If you never tow empty, then I recommend moving up one system size to # RP66084.

I definitely recommend a weight distribution system for your application over the weigh safe ball. The ball is nice for measuring tongue weight if you are using different trailer weights constantly, but for your application, it doesn't sound like it is necessary. You will however need a hitch ball for your weight distribution system and I recommend # A-90 for a 2 inch ball with the proper shank diameter for this system or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball...whichever matches your trailer coupler.
