Adjusting Brake Controller in 2004 Toyota Tundra Causes Fuse to Blow

Question:

30 amp fuse on the truck keeps blowing every time I try and adjust anything on the brake controller. Is there a place I should start for troubleshooting? 04 Toyota Tundra V8

It sounds like there is a short somewhere that is causing the fuse to blow. Which fuse is it meaning what is it for? Is it the fuse just for the brake controller or is it a general tow package fuse?

I would start by checking the trailer connector on your 2004 Toyota Tundra (and the one on the trailer if it happens when towing). Make sure the connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside, where the wires attach, and outside on the pins. Also check as much of the wiring as you can and fix any pinched or damaged wires.

Also make sure that if you are using a plug in type of wiring harness the separate white ground wire is attached to a bare metal surface. If you are using a Curt brake controller that does not have an extra ground wire I recommend splicing a wire to the harnesses white wire and grounding the other end to a bare metal surface.

If the controller is hardwired in then it should be grounded to the negative battery terminal. I have also included some help articles on testing and troubleshooting brake controllers for you.
