Absolutely. I've attached some articles on axle location to assist as you shorten the trailer. For your axle, you can use the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System - Spindle w/ Brake Flange - Regular Tires - 7K # TASR7KS01 for a single axle application. This will make it easy for you as you don't need to worry about hangers, springs, etc. It will simply bolt to your frame and then you run a 2 inch square bar between them into the integrated holes.
For a tandem axle assembly, you can use two # A35RS545E for the complete system. Your other option for a thru axle system is to weld hangers, add springs, and mount the thru-axle. There is far more measuring required here, but if you can weld it is a less expensive route and a more traditional setup. For this, use two # e43SR axles, hanger kit # APT3, and springs # e54SR. Then you need u-bolt kit # APUBR-1.
With any adjustments and changes to your trailer, your total capacity will only be as strong as the weakest component on your trailer.
