Recommended Aftermarket Trailer Brake Controller for 2015 GMC Yukon with Tow Package
Question:
My 2015 GMC Yukon claims to have the tow package however, it does not have the OEM integrated brake controller installed in the dash. Ive read differing opinions on whether the OEM controller can be installed with the correct pigtail or is this something that simply cant be done. Why does the P3 work fine with the pigtail and the OEM wont?

Based on my research, if your 2015 GMC Yukon did not come from the factory equipped with the OEM brake controller, this is not something that can be added. It looks like the logic and programming will be completely different on your model Yukon, so the IBC cannot be installed. Using the correct pigtail/harness will work to physically plug the IBC into your vehicle, but the computer simply won't be able to recognize it.
With that being said, you still can absolutely (and easily) install a trailer brake controller on your vehicle. In fact, many customers state that an aftermarket unit like the excellent Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 is far superior to the OEM units that come with vehicles like your Yukon. Unlike the factory controller, the P3 allows for storable settings, different boost levels, and also features continuous diagnostics that will clearly alert you to any potential issues.
In order to install the controller, all you will need is the Plug-In Adapter # 3016. One end of this adapter will plug into the brake controller itself, while the other end will connect directly to the built-in port beneath the Yukon's dash. This is the only connection that needs to be made.
I have attached the written installation instructions/manual for the Prodigy P3 that you can also take a look at.
