Does Heat Shield have to be Trimmed to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Toyota Camry

Question:

In all of the instructional videos Ive seen, the exhaust heat shield is trimmed to fit around the passenger side, forward bolt of the hitch. Some videos cut a notch out, others trim the whole heat shield. Is it necessary? Seems like there is enough clearance to leave the heat shield whole and just bolt it up after the hitch install, with the one OEM bolt towards its front and then with either with the forward bolt of the hitch or a self-tapping screw.

It is possible that you may not have to trim the heat shield to install trailer hitch # 36540 on your 2017 Toyota Camry. As long as the hitch installs correctly and is contact with the frame (which means nothing is sandwiched between the hitch and frame) then you will be good to go.

If you will be doing any light towing with the hitch the recommended ball mount is # 36071. For compatible balls you can use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch ball or # 19258 for a 2 inch.

And for trailer wiring you can use # 118405 to add a 4-Way flat connector to the rear of the vehicle.
