Using a Sliding 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch in a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Short Bed

Question:

Hello Im a novice to 5th wheel towing. I have a short bed dodge 2500 and I had a couple of questions if you can help my knowledge and will help in buying the correct hitch. In using a slider hitch as the E16 or A20 which has the slider and the arm to allow it to. In driving situations on the streets and making turns getting off the freeway can the hitch stay in the normal forward tow position. Or does the driver need to jump out and release the hitch so the trailer has more room. Im guessing not due to the inconvenience of that. And only in situations of very tight turns, backing up, etc the hitch needs to be slid back on the rails. I know there are some that have more movement but the cost is a lot more. When using a manual slide fifth wheel hitch, like the Curt A20 # C16541, you want to keep the hitch locked in the forward, towing position as much as possible. When engaging the slider it moves the hitch back behind the truck's axle which puts more of the htich weight on the truck's suspension instead of on the axle like it should be.

The only time you should slide the hitch back is when you when you need it for turning clearance which is normally for extremely sharp turns or when backing up like you mentioned.

You also need an install bracket kit to use a hitch. Part # C16420-204 is confirmed to fit your 2005 Dodge Ram. You can also add wiring to your truck's bed using # HM42137 to make it easier to hook up.
