What is Typical Axle Capcity of 1-3/4 inch Diameter Axle

Question:

Hello, I just bought a used custom trailer with tandem axle, it is a 9x4 wich I will be using for hauling my atv. Axles are 1 3/4 inch in diameter, with CEI hubs 5 x 4 1/2 with 12 inch wheels, what capacity can be each axle, I would like to convert it to single axle, but not sure if one is enough for carrying 900 pounds, plus the weight of the trailer that is more or less 500 pounds. I dont want to be in the limit.

1-3/4 inch diameter axles typically have a capacity of 2,000 lbs. If the weight of your ATVs plus the trailer is going to be less than 2k you'd be alright most likely. Is there a reason you couldn't leave the second axle on? Having a second axle will give you more than the capacity you'd need and in the event of a blow out will help prevent losing control of the trailer on the highway or losing cargo.

Typical Axle Diameters Based on Axle Capacity
- 1,000-lb - 2,000-lb Axles: 1-1/2 inch - 1-3/4 inch diameter
- 3,500-lb Axles: 2-3/8 inch diameter
- 6,000-lb - 7,200-lb Axles: 3 inch diameter
- 8,000-lb Axles: 3-1/2 inch diameter
- 9,000-lb Axles: 4 inch diameter
- 10,000-lb Or more axles: 5 inch diameter
