Will Adding a Higher Rated Trailer Hitch to a 2010 Cadillac SRX Increase Its Towing Capacity

Question:

Im looking at a 2010 Cadillac SRX and see its rated for only 2500lbs but that youve got the Class 3 hitch installed on one. can it tow up to 5K or 6K lbs with the hitch?

Expert Reply:

Trailer hitch receivers, such as the Curt # C13002 that fits your 2010 Cadillac SRX, are often overrated compared to the vehicles they're designed to fit. Unfortunately, adding a higher rated hitch does not increase the towing capacity of your vehicle, you're always limited by the lowest rated component of a towing set up which is often the vehicle itself. So if you've found that your Cadillac has a maximum towing capacity of 2,500 pounds then you cannot tow a heavier trailer.

Your owner's manual is usually the best source to find the towing capacity of your vehicle.
