Parts Needed for Converting Trailer to EOH Disc Brake Operation

Question:

I planning on upgrading my trailer brakes to electric over hydraulic so could help with identifying what parts i will need.I have a Dexter axle serial # 113289307 stamped on it , I dont know if its a 7K or 8K axle. I know i will need a Dexter 1600 psi actuator but not sure about Dexter brakes or Kodiak. The axles do have never lube bearings. I will be using a 2016 Chevy to pull my rv. Thanks.

To convert a trailer with hydraulic disc brakes to electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) actuator operation you will need to either replace or immobilize the existing surge coupler so it no longer compresses. A bolt installed horizontally through the coupler will immobilize it.

Then you will need an EOH actuator with the required 1600-psi pressure that can operate your disc brake calipers. I suggest the HydraStar # HBA16. You do not need to replace your brake lines or breakaway kit but you will need a electronic trailer brake controller that is compatible with EOH actuators. Not all controllers will work with EOH systems but the Prodigy P2 # 90885 will work fine with both electric drum brakes and EOH disc brake setups. In your 2016 Chevy pickup you will install the controller using harness # 3016 to plug in the Prodigy.

If you already have disc brakes on the trailer then the actuator and brake controller are all you need. If you are replacing drum brakes with the EOH disc brakes then you will also need disc brake assemblies.

I checked with my contact at Dexter Axle and they advised your axle is rated for 7200-lbs. The linked page displays all 7200-lb-rated Kodiak disc brake kits such as raw-finish kit # K2HR729D.
