How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer
Question:
I have a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer. It is factory wired with a 4 pole flat connecter at the hitch. I want to install part #37185 so I can utilize the brakes on my camper. I have located the connector for the brake controller beneath the dash by the steering column. All the trailer towing fuses are in place in the fuse box in the engine compartment. My question: Where do I look to find the wires that I assume are coming from the front of the vehicle to the rear so I can connect the blue brake wire and black 12V power wire contained on part 37185? I understand the white get connected to a good ground and the purple is optional and likely not needed. Thanks very much.

On your 2008 Mercury Mountaineer there should be a wiring harness that is attached to the 4-way wiring near the rear of your vehicle that has the brake controller wiring. This is the wiring that you would connect the Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole # 37185 to.
You would plug your 4-way into the # 37185 and then wire the brake controller output circuit to the blue wire, the auxiliary 12 volt power to the black wire, ground the white wire, and then run the purple to a reverse lockout circuit if needed.
If you do not find the wiring harness you will need to install a Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions for this product as well as a installation video that shows this product being installed onto a vehicle for you to check out.
