How to Have a VIN Assigned to a Home-Fabricated Trailer

Question:

I’ve brought a trailer online and It has no plates owner said he had built the trailer basically from scratch and said I just have to take it in to get a vin number as it doesn’t have any thing on it or no model numbers have I just wasted my money how do I go about this ?

When a trailer is fabricated by an individual it is possible to have a VIN assigned to it by taking it to a local highway authority facility. The VIN can be assigned by that highway authority based on the size, weight and features on the trailer, including the overall length and the number of axles.
