Tire Chain Recommendation for 2017 GMC Sierra

Question:

I am looking for a snow chain product for my 2017 GMC Sierra 4wd. The dealer reccomends not using snow chains due to limited clearance between the side wall and the vehicle. im sure you get this situation all the time. Can you recommend a snow/ice traction product?? please and thank you in advance.

Vehicle owner's manuals will indicate compatibility with tire chains. Some vehicles can use tire chains only on one axle or the other, or only on certain specific tire sizes. Sometimes only special low-profile S-Class chains can be used.

The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 can come from the factory with as many as seven different stock tire sizes. Dealerships may choose to alter the wheel/tire size to enhance sales potential. The linked page displays the factory tires sizes; select your size to see chains that fit the tires. Tire size will be indicated on the tire sidewall.

The smallest factory tire offered on the 2017 Sierra 1500 is the 255/70-17 size; the largest is size 285/45-22. These differ a lot in their overall diameter and this affects not only which chains will fit but also whether or not there will be sufficient clearance to avoid the chains contacting critical components like brake lines. The smallest size 255/70-17 has an overall diameter of 31-inches but the largest size 285/45-22 has an overall diameter of 32-inches.

I reviewed an online edition of the manual for your truck and it notes on pages 422-3 which tire sizes can use chains. You should check your own manual in case it differs.

For tire size 255/70-17 the manual says chains can be used. A great option for this size is the S-Class Konig chain set # TH02230K77. These are advanced low-profile chains that provide extra clearance, protection for your truck rims and a quick-release. They feature D-link construction and include ice spikes for grip. All chains for this tire size are linked along with a helpful article.
