Thank you very much for your question, and I'm sorry about the confusion, but we shall clear things up right now. Since your 2004 Ford Ranger is already complete with a tow package and a 4 pin connector, depending if you want to use a brake controller or not to control the brakes on the trailer will determine the solution for this question.

First, I will give you instructions for If you were not planning on using a brake controller. The product you need is a 4 pole to 7 pole adapter # 30717 and a mounting bracket # 18136. After installing the mounting bracket plug, please locate your 4 pin connector, and plug that connector to the adapter # 30717 and you are set to go. It is recommended to use Dielectric Grease # 11755 to combat corrosion and water damage You now have a 7way connection at the end of your vehicle to connect with your trailer that has a 7 pin oval connector. However you will still only have the functions of the original 4-way.

Secondly, I will give you instructions for If you ARE planning on using a brake controller The Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7 is the product that will properly make a 7 way connection from your vehicle to your trailer with all functions working. The tools you will need for this install are drill, ratchet socket set, wire crimpers/strippers, small utility knife, Philips or flathead screwdriver. I have attached the instructions and a step-by-step video on how to successfully complete this install on a Ford Ranger similar to yours.

The best brake controller we have is our Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. This brake controller activates trailer brakes in proportion to your Ford Ranger's braking action and automatically adjusts your trailer's braking based on deceleration of tow vehicle. This brake controller activates immediately, no pausing like with time delayed brake controllers. I have attached the video on how to successfully complete this install.
