How To Install Tekonsha Prodigy P-3 Brake Controller # 90195 on a 2011 Toyota Venza

Question:

I just ordered a P3 controller but could not find a generic wiring drawing in the online manual? It is going into a Toyota Venza 2011 and I want to know if the power for this comes straight from the Batt. or a key switched output, and if so what is a good spot to hook into? Also do you know which colour brake wire I need to tap into? yellow or light green My dealer is extremely un-helpfull in all this, hope you can help. Thanks

To install the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller, part # 90195 on your 2011 Toyota Venza, you will need to hard wire using brake controller 7 a 4-Way installation kit, part # ETBC7. The power for the brake controller will come directly from the vehicle battery. The Prodigy P-3 will go into a sleep mode after several minutes of no activity. The power draw while in this sleep mode is so small that it is not enough to discharge your battery.

This # ETBC7 kit will need to plug into a 4-Way connector at the rear of your vehicle. If you first need to install a 4-Way connector on your vehicle, you can use the Tow Ready T-one wiring harness, part # 118482. I am including a link to the installation instructions for the Tow Ready wiring harness and a video link of this same harness being installed on a 2011 Toyota Camry, which is a similar installation to the one you will do for the Venza.

With the 4-Way connector now on your vehicle you will plug in the 7-Way and 4-Way adapter included in the # ETBC7 kit to the 4-Way connector on the vehicle. The 4 remaining wires will be hardwired to the vehicle. I am including a link to detailed instructions on how to install the # ETBC7 kit on your vehicle.

When connecting the red wire on the brake controller to your brake wire, you will need to find the wires connected to the brake stop light switch at the top of the brake pedal. Using a circuit tester like the Quickee Tester, part # PTW2993 and test the wires to locate the wire that carries a signal only when the brake pedal is engaged. It might be the green with yellow tracer wire, but test with the circuit tester to make sure.
