Recommended Roof Cargo Basket for Leer Bed Cap Shell with Thule Roof Rack Integrated
Question:
I am considering the purchase of a Surco basket Item # SPS5060-T400 on my Leer camper shell. I have Leer 100XQ shell mounted on my 2017 Ford F150 Double Cab truck with 5.5foot bed. The shell has factory installed Thule roof rack and square cross bars. According to the Leer website the shell has a 150# weight capacity. So I am curious to see how much this Surco basket weighs? I would also appreciate your opinion about the Thule XL basket for this application. Which basket would work best? The Surco looks like it has more capacity space and accessories items. Thank you.

The Surco Safari Rack 5.0 Rooftop Cargo Basket for Thule Roof Racks - 60" Long x 50" Wide # SPS5060-T400 weighs just under 33 lbs and is rated for 250 lbs, so even though you won't be able to carry over 117 lbs, it will be very durable. This is a very strong cargo basket and as you stated has more accessories.
The Thule Canyon XT Roof Cargo Basket - Steel - 49" x 40" x 6" - 150 lbs # TH859XT weighing 40 lbs or the Thule Canyon XT Roof Cargo Basket - Steel - 69" x 40" x 6" - 150 lbs # TH859XT-8591XT weighing 50 lbs, are great options as well. They weigh a little more and are not rated as strong, but that is most likely because most roof systems are rated for 165 lbs max anyway.
For cargo space and durability the Surco rack is my recommendation. If you are looking for a more aerodynamic option then the Thule rack with the integrated fairing is the better option. It sounds like capacity, the lightweight design to not diminish load, and available accessories are all high priorities, so the Surco rack is my recommendation for you.
