Recommended Trailer Suspension to Minimize Impact of Uneven Surfaces Entering and Exiting Bridges
Question:
I have a 2011Chevy 2500hd with a 6.6 duramax 4x4 crew cab and tow a 30ft 5th wheel travel trailer. The trailer is a lighter weight version and doesnt the back of the pickup to much. It would be nice to lift the back end a bit, but my main concern is that when traveling over the interstates and other roads, the uneven entrances and exits of bridges cause the back end of the truck to bounce until it stabilizes. I dont think it bottoms out but the ride is annoying as hell and I am worried about possible damage. What would be a fix for this problem other than moving out of Calif.

Since your trailer is bouncing and not necessarily swaying, the best option is to add some suspension to your trailer to help absorb some of that shock. I recommend the E-Z Flex Heavy Duty Rubber Suspension System by Dexter Axle - 5-5/8" Equalizers # K71-652-00. This kit is for tandem axles up to 6,000 lbs each. The cushioned equalizers have rubber to isolate and absorb shock before it impacts the trailer frame and contents. This installation is easy and will give you the ability to hit those entrances and exits of bridges without the continuing bounce.
If you want to raise your back end, that will require adjusting your 5th wheel hitch or pin box to allow for a more level towing. If this has already been done, then raising your trailer is the best option. An over-under kit to flip your axles is the best option using # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8 inch axles or # K71-385-00 for 3 inch axles. This will raise your trailer by the thickness of the axle as well as the thickness of your leaf springs.
