If you have a roof rack, you'll have an easier time with transporting the kayak with a J-style rack, which can be a great add on gift to make transporting the kayak easier for your son. I recommend the entry-level Swagman Contour, part # S65148 as a quick install to your roof rack's crossbars for easy, durable transport. The Contour includes two tiedown straps and bow and stern straps. Its' also compatible with most factory, round, square or elliptical bars.
If you don't have a roof rack, you'll want to go with a solid, foam block option. I recommend Rightline Gear's Block kit, part # RL100K10 . This kit includes tie down cam straps that will connect to your raised side rails and bow and stern straps.
Some great addons that will make your transporting (and subsequently your son's) easier are Malone Quick-Loops, part # MPG308, which will add reinforced nylon loops to your vehicle's trunk and hood, letting you attach to them rather than directly to the vehicle, protecting your finish.
If he begins kayaking often, or if you just want to give him better tiedowns, the Thule Quick Draw Tie-Down Ropes w/ Ratchets and Strap Loops # TH855XT replaces your included tiedowns with ratchet-pulley bow and stern lines that 'remember" their length and save a lot of time when loading and unloading.
I've included video reviews of all of these parts so you can get more familiar with their features and how they perform and make the best choice for you.
