Troubleshooting Draw Tite Activator IV Error Code OL
Question:
I recently installed a Draw Tite Activator IV part #5504 with the ETBC7 kit. Occasionally the brake controller will flash the OL code for a short in the blue wire. I have double checked my connections and even ran a new wire in place of the blue wire from the vehicle between the controller and the trailer plug in. My vehicle is a 1998 Chevy Silverado which comes from the factory with the blue and orange wires taped up and ready for a brake controller.

Since you have replaced the blue brake controller output wire from the Draw-Tite Activator 5504 in your Silverado and you still occasionally see the overload (OL) code I would focus on the trailer wiring.
This intermittent issue could be caused by a short in the brake circuit wire on the trailer, corrosion within the trailer plug (or the 7-way socket on the truck) or even trapped material. Any of these could cause the controller to sense an overload.
Check all trailer wiring for the brake circuit, from the trailer 7-way plug to the junction box if there is one and on to the brake assemblies. The brake circuit wire might simply be rubbing on the trailer frame and worn insulation could be the cause for the OL code. If the brake magnets are badly worn this too could cause the problem.
