Recommended Cargo Box for a 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon
Question:
I want to buy a roof rack that will be capable of carrying a cargo box on my 2014 Subaru Outback. When I search by that car on your site, there are about ten options for racks, except that every single one says excluding Sport with factory installed rails that run front to back.inch I have an Outback Premium, not Sportinch as far as I know, but it has factory installed rails that run front to back. And, most of the length of those rails is covered by plastic so the actual raised rails are only exposed about 2 feet, meaning any cross bars attaching to the rack will only be 2 feet apart max. Do any racks work on this car? This is killing me. I was counting on being able to carry gear on the roof.

The premium package on your 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon should have factory cross bars integrated into the raised side rails. If there is a bar between the raised side rails then you have this feature. In order to open the crossbars, you will need an allen key which releases one of the contact points on the crossbar. The other side of the crossbar pivots across the roof and then secures in the existing attachment point.
If you have the factory crossbars then I recommend taking a look at the Yakima RocketBox Pro part # Y07192. This cargo box has 14 cubic feet of storage space, two SKS locking cores with included keys, and will not interfere with the rear hatch on your Outback while opened. You can see this box installed on a similar 2015 Subaru Outback Wagon in the attached video.
If you do not have the factory crossbars then I recommend using the Yakima CoreBar Crossbar Roof Rack part # Y00421, part # Y53TR, and part # Y00239. The CoreBar crossbar roof rack will attach in the factory mounting points on your Outback and provide a crossbar spread of 30". Therefore, the above Yakima RocketBox Pro will also work well with this application. I have attached a review video of the crossbars for you.
