Recommended Trailer Connection Wiring and Brake Controller for 2005 Dodge Ram Half Ton

Question:

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram base model truck it has a Factory 4 pin connector now but I want to wire in a 7 pin for a brake controller do I have to run a new harness or is there one already ran from the factory to do a 7 pin conversion and which brake controller do you recommend its a half ton truck

The 2005 Dodge Ram base didn't have a factory 4-way. If you have the factory 4-way connection, then you can use the Hopkins Endurance Quick-Install 7-Way Trailer Connector # HM42190 or the Pollak # HM40975-11933, both of which plug into that same harness to give you a 7-way.

Because you have the factory 4-flat connector, you will have the wiring needed for your brake controller. You will simply use the wiring harness # 3020-P which plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

For your brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. It is a very easy to use controller with presets that are simple to navigate and an LCD screen that takes code deciphering out of the equation. This controller will give you easy to understand diagnostics and troubleshooting should the need arise. It is a proportional controller that will apply the brakes on your trailer at the same time and with the same intensity as you hit the brake pedal in your truck.

If you have further questions, let me know, but this will be a great system for you that will be extremely easy to install.
