Your 2005 Toyota truck has a separate wiring system, which as you mentioned, means the brake and turn signals are sent along separate wires. In order to combine the circuits to match that of the trailer, a converter is needed.

If you have the 2005 Toyota Tacoma, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118496. This custom-fit harness is confirmed to fit this truck and will install by simply connecting to the existing ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights. The harness features a built-in converter that will ensure the Tacoma's wiring matches that of your trailer. Once installed, you will have a 4-way connector at the rear of the truck for connecting with and powering the trailer's signal lights.

I have attached an installation video on the 2006 Tacoma that you can use for reference along with the written instructions.
