2017 Subaru Outback Wagon Kayak Racks for Factory Roof Rack Systems
Question:
Hello, I have the above vehicle with factory-installed, aero-style crossbars. I have 2 Keowee kayaks approx. 9.5foot long, pretty wide, and about 35 ibs. apiece Id like to carry from time to time. The kayaks are too wide to carry level i.e., on side-by-side foam blocks, and I dont want or need the vertical stacking type of rack typically used for 4 kayaks. Ive used J-style racks on previous vehicles. I will only use the racks occasionally, so Im interested in inexpensive but sturdy ones that install on the crossbars quickly and easily. Your recommendations both as to type of rack - I think I want J-style but other suggestions? - as well as make/model? Thanks.

For the 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon, I recommend the Malone DownLoader, part # MPG114MD. This is a flexible, J-Style rack that installs quickly onto your crossbars, and folds flat for when you don't have time to pull it off immediately.
The carrier also includes small load-assist ramps on both J's of the carrier, helping support at least a little weight of the kayak as you get it onto the roof of your vehicle. Additionally, the DownLoader can support kayaks up to 36 inches wide, so you should be able to fit your above-average width kayaks into it.
I also like how the insides of the cradles have anti-skid pads rather than actual padding, helping the kayak stay put as you tie it down and during starts and stops.
For this kit, I recommend two additional accessories that could be helpful in protecting your vehicle, the Malone Quick-Loop, part # MPG308 and the Thule Quick Draw Tie-Down system, part # TH855XT. These add an easier to use mounting system for your bow and stern tie downs, making the process much easier. The Quick-Loops add mounting points to your hood and trunk, meaning you can hook into these reinforced nylon loops rather than your hood, preventing the risk of damage to your vehicle.
I've included videos of all of these parts so you can get an idea of how they work in practice.
