Recommended 5-Way Vehicle Side Connection for Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a new 26foot foot, tandem axle boat trailer, with power brakes, with a 5-way flat male connector. My 2000 Ford Explorer has a 4-way flat connector. What do I need to hook-up the trailer using a 5-way female connector and to ensure that the trailer does not lock up when Im in reverse?

For a nice clean connection, you can use the Hopkins Endurance 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector - Vehicle End - Ergonomic Design # HM47900 to connect to your 4-way wiring and then add the reverse power lead from behind your tail light. Another option is to use the Tow Ready 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter # 20036 which has just the 5th function wire to connect to your reverse signal. This adapter simply requires less splicing. I've attached a video of this install to assist.
