Recommended Trailer Hitch to Replace Factory Hitch on 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500

Question:

The factory hitch on my 2001 Silverado 1500 extended cab 4x4 5.3 failed - the passenger side of the hitch rusted and broke while towing, ping the tongue of my utility trailer to the pavement. was coming to a stop at the time, fortunately Before I can even begin to choose a replacement hitch, I need to know if the factory hitch was a bolt on, or if GM welds them on. I know things are pretty rusty under there since road salt is a big issue here. I dont know if Ill be able to buy a hitch from you to install, or if Ill have to have it welded on at a garage. If you can help clear anything up, or give some pointers, great. If not, I still appreciate your time in reading this.

Based on my research, it appears the factory trailer hitch on your 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 was bolted to the frame.

If you are looking to install a replacement hitch, I recommend looking at the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # 13322. This Class III trailer hitch is custom-fit for your truck and will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and a 6,000 pound towing weight capacity. The hitch features a gloss black powder coat finish over a protective base coat that will offer superior rust resistance. All of the necessary hardware is included.

I have attached the written installation instructions that you can also take a look at. You will just want to make sure you are staying below both the trailer hitch's and Silverado's towing weight capacity. I recommend taking a look at the owner's manual for your vehicle to confirm its capacities, as it is possible that it is lower than the hitch's. You will need to follow whichever capacity is lowest.
