Recommended Carriers for 40-lb and 70-lb Kayaks

Question:

I have narrowed down my SUV search to late model CX-9 and Highlander, 2015 or newer, and the higher end models, like CX-9 Grand Touring or Highlander Limited. I have a two kayaks, including a 10 foot recreational sit on top about 40 lbs, and a 17 foot sea kayak about 70 lb, 22 inch wide. Ill probably purchase a canoe as well, but expect to only carry two boats at any time. Ill also add a trailer hitch to either, for those times I want to add a bike rack. And I want to leave my cargo box/basket options open too, in case I need additional cargo space. I also have a hitch haul. Im hesitant to purchase either of these vehicles until I know I can haul the boats, particularly the 17 foot long one. Please help!

Since most roof rack options have a weight capacity of around 165 lbs either one of those vehicles should do a great job, but you will want to check roof weight capacities to make sure. I don't think one will really have an advantage over the other, so I recommend exploring some of the different features of each vehicle to see which one suits your lifestyle best.

I have attached links to the roof rack options available for both the 2015 Mazda CX-9 and the 2015 Toyota Highlander for you to filter through. If you let me know the year/make/model of the vehicle that you decide to go with and whether it has raised factory rails that go front to back I can make a recommendation for you.

When it comes to carrying kayaks I recommend going with the Yakima JayLow Kayak Carrier # Y04073. This can carry up to 2 kayaks with a combined weight of 110 lbs so you will want to make sure the combined weight of the kayaks is under that weight capacity.

To carry your canoe you will want a different carrier like the Swagman Exo Aero # S65145. This carrier can be used to carry 1 kayak or 1 canoe and mounts to round, square, aero/elliptical and most factory crossbars that are no wider that 2-1/2 inches. You could use this carrier in addition to the J-Style carrier to carry 1 kayak and 1 canoe at the same time (granted the roof weight capacity allows it).

Let me know what vehicle you decide to go with and I can make a recommendation for a roof rack that is compatible with these carrier options as well as a cargo box/basket, trailer hitch, and a bike rack.
