Brake Controller Recommendation for 2005 Dodge Ram

Question:

Hi, I just bought a used HandH cargo trailer with tandem axles and brakes on both axles. The wiring was bad/corroded/broken so I purchased part # 277-000141. I installed it today and everything works except the electric brakes. When I test the electric brakes pin on my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Vehicle Side I do not get any voltage. Do I have to have a brake controller in order to use electric brakes on my trailer? If not how can I check to see whats wrong? Thanks for your assistance.

The issue is that you do not have a brake controller installed in your truck. Without a brake controller there is no way for that circuit to have voltage on it. That circuit needs to have a smooth application of voltage that ramps up and the only way to do that is with a brake controller sensing how much braking pressure your tow vehicle is applying and then applying a proportional amount.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. This will be the last brake controller you buy. It can easily be transferred to future vehicles as well.

To install it all you'd need is the correct brake controller install harness part # 3020-P.
