Brake Controller Recommendation for 2013 Winnebago Journey
Question:
What is the correct brake controller to install for my 2013 Journey? I have a tow dolly with electric brakes. It has a seven pin connector on the dolly. I also have a 7 pin connector under the dash on the drivers side.

The 2013 Winnebago Journey is built on a Maxum Freightliner Chassis. The best option would be a proportional brake controller like the Prodigy P3 # 90195. A proportional controller senses how the tow vehicle is slowing or stopping and applies the tow dolly brakes with the same intensity. So, if you slam on the brakes, the controller will activate the dolly brakes just as forcefully.
Currently, no brake controller manufacturers make a plug-and-play harness for the Winnebago Journey. You mentioned that you have a connector under your dash, which sounds like a brake port. Often Freightliner will put a brake port on their chassis labeled TRBRK or TBC, but I am not aware of a manufacturer that makes a harness that will fit this port. However, the connector can be removed and the wires can be hardwired into the brake controller.
There are 4 wires on a brake controller that will need to be connected. The black wire is for 12-volt power, the white wire is for ground, the blue wire is brake output power from the brake controller and the red wire connects to the stop light switch. You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2992 to test the wires functions on your journey. One wire will have constant 12-volt power, which connects to the black wire. One wire should only have power when the brake pedal is pressed, which will connect to the red wire. One wire is the ground, and the final wire should run back to the 7-way trailer connector at the rear of your RV.
If you do not have a 7-way trailer connector on the back of your Winnebago, let me know and I can give you instructions on how to install one in conjunction with a brake controller. I've attached some articles on brake controller installation which you may find helpful.
