Would a cheaper brake controller work? I plan on hauling a 4 axle trailer weighing about 5000 lb

You would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7. I attached installation instructions and an install video for this product as well. The install video shows a 2003 Express Van just like yours. You'll want the some additional wiring as well, which you can get with part # 10-2-1 since your vehicle is longer.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup.

For a more economically priced solution the Tekonsha Primus IQ part # TK90160 would be a great option. It costs a bit less and still works great. The biggest differences are on the inside. The P2 has software and circuitry with far more capabilities than the Primus IQ. The P2 can be used with electric over hydraulic trailer brake systems. It also has advanced diagnostic abilities to help you troubleshoot problems with the brakes and brake wiring like shorted magnets or loose wires. They both use accelerometers to detect how hard you are braking, but the P2 uses a little more advanced version. You can mount the P2 straight up, straight down or anywhere in between, where as the Primus is limited to a range of 0 degrees to 70 degrees nose up. If you are looking for the best value with the most features, I would suggest the P2. If you are looking for an economical controller that will perform well for you the Primus IQ is a very good controller.
