Weight Distribution and Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for a 2010 Dodge Ram 3500
Question:
I have a 8500 lbs 31 ft sprinter trailer , I use an equalizer hitch assembly rated for that truck and trailer . I pull it with a 3500 ram deisel . the truck seems to feel light in the front end , and u can feel the trailer moving the truck over the road at 100 km hr . it feels like the truck is being held back . . .. any suggestions , and is the equalizer a good hitch for sway control . if not what is the best hitch assembly on the market ?? Thanks so much

At highway speeds, the trailer is going to add more wind resistance and be more susceptible to cross winds. This is probably what is causing the sensation that the trailer is holding the truck back and the swaying you are experiencing.
The weight distribution spring bars on your current set up may not be rated high enough for the trailer. You need a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight when it is loaded and ready to tow. At 8,500 pounds, you would need a system rated high enough for an 850 to 1,275 pound tongue weight.
I recommend a system rated for 800 to 1,500 pounds tongue weight like the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control, # RP66130. The weight distribution alone can help a little with sway, but the built-in dual-cam sway control that comes with this system is the best sway control system available. It is a pro-active system that stops sway before it starts.
You would just need an adjustable shank, # RP54970, and a properly sized ball like # 63840. I have included links to the installation details for you to view.
If the truck is sagging in the back, you may be interested in suspension enhancement like # SSR-302-47.
