Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with Brakes Using a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe

Question:

For a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe to pull Flagstaff A-Frame pop-up Camper that says it has a 7-way pigtail. Looking to get Curt hitch C13153. What wiring do I need, espeically to ensure camper brakes work WELL? Thinking I will need a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller. Is that right? Will I still need a wiring harness? Any other adapters needed? What time estimate will it take to install the wiring? Thanks.

The Curt trailer hitch receivers for the 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe are # C13152 if you have a Sport model or # C13153 if you have an SE or Limited. I've attached videos of both being installed.

In order to connect to the Flagstaff's 7-way and power the brakes you'll first need a 4-way wiring harness on the Hyundai. The Curt # C56184 will work regardless of which model your Santa Fe is. This install video is also attached.

Then you'll use our # ETBC7 kit to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. This kit includes the 7-way, as well as all of the wiring to connect to a brake controller. The Prodigy P2 # 90885 is a great brake controller. Another option is its upgrade that has an easy to read LCD the P3 # 90195. I've attached a video of the P3 being installed using the # ETBC7 kit on a 2014 Santa Fe. If you choose the P2 the process is the same. The install isn't all that difficult but it does take time. A professional install takes at least a few hours.

You'll also need a ball mount and hitch ball. I've attached a link of our selection of ball mounts for a 2 inch hitch receiver as well as an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop you may need. Once you choose a ball mount you can then choose a hitch ball to fit it.

One way to make choosing a ball mount easier is to go with an adjustable ball mount like the B&W Tow & Stow # BWTS10038B. It features the ability to be flipped under the hitch when not using it and will provide up to 5-1/2 inches of rise or 5 inches of drop.

For a pin and clip to fit you can use # PC3 or if you'd like to have a locking pin you can use # BX8858.

I've also included links to some articles on towing that you might find helpful.
