Some trailer connectors can be configured in more than one way, depending on the type of trailer. If you refer to the linked article on trailer wiring you will see that, as a example, 7-way sockets can be set up one way for RVs and another way for commercial/agricultural trailers.
Wire colors are often assigned to a specific function, but not always. Usually, for example, a blue wire will be used for the trailer brake circuit on a vehicle and trailer. But since there is no guarantee that a specific wire color was used for a particular function, it is best to test the wiring to see what it does, and then connect it to the appropriate contact in the socket or plug.
A circuit tester like # PTW2993 will let you test for any given signal (say a right turn signal) which will then let you connect this to the right contact for whichever wiring format you are using.
