Recommended Tow Bar Wiring and Supplemental Brake System for 2016 Ford Edge SEL 3.5 V-6

Question:

Can you describe what and how to provide lighting and power for supplemental braking system to our 2016 Ford Edge. Ford requires that you disconnect the negative terminal on the battery. Hoping to use the SMI Duo brake system since we have a gas coach without air brakes. The issue is that we havent been able to find correct wiring to the Edge tail/brake lights, and we need to provide power to the supplemental brake system. I'm happy to help with your lighting and supplemental braking system on your 2016 Ford Edge. For your battery disconnect, I recommend the Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch for Towed Vehicle w/ Supplemental Braking System # RM-766. This will allow you to disconnect your battery without needing to physically wrench on it each time you decide to tow it.

For your vehicle, the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System - Proportional # SM99251 is a confirmed fit and will work great when using the Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751475 which will send the motorhome the proper information when the braking in the towed vehicle is applied for proper communication.

I reached out to my contact at Roadmaster and the trim of your vehicle is what comes into play for the wiring. If you have a titanium or sport model, you can use the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267 with no additional parts. This kit will also allow you to run a power line to the braking system as well. Since you have the SEL model, the vehicle has variable voltage system and you will need to add two 50 ohm 10 watt resisters for the system to function properly. Unfortunately we don't carry those resistors at this time, so you will need to obtain them elsewhere.

This combination will allow you to use the parts you need for your vehicle lighting and braking to work correctly.
