Hitching Procedure for Pro Series 16K 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
Question:
Just installed pro series 16000 hitch. Reading the directions on hitching your trailer it states to leave the Jaws shut without the handle being pulled. The Kingpin will open the Jaws and shut the Jaws once the Kingpin is home. Watching a YouTube demonstration video of the same hitch shows to have the Jaws open. Which method is recommended? also noticed on a fellow camper with same hitch that the Jaws do not fully meet when locked in place and ready to tow. Is that Gap normal?

I checked with Pro Series regarding the hitching procedure for your 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch model 30855. As you mentioned reading in the instruction manual, you should leave the handle in the closed position while backing the truck slowly into the trailer. As the king pin enters the hitch, it will push the hitch jaws open and extend the handle. Then when the king pin completely enters the head, the jaws will spring closed around the king pin. The handle will also return to the closed position. Pro Series states that you should only use this method for hitching with this 5th Wheel Hitch.
The jaws should be closed completely around the king pin when locked into place. It's possible that your friend's hitch has some dirt or debris that may be preventing a completely secure connection and simply needs to be cleaned out. The jaws should definitely close all the way around the king pin.
