Replacement Dexter Electric Brakes for Trailer with 9,000 or 10,000 Pound Axles

Question:

I have a tandem dual trailer with Dexter axles model d1012. The trailer id tag says the trailer is rated at 18000lb. With 9000lb axles. But according to the model number directly on the axle, I believe them to be 10000lb axles, making a 20000lb trailer. What brake assembly do you recommend?

For the axles on your trailer, I recommend the Dexter Electric Brake Kit # 23-450-451. These are self-adjusting brake assemblies that measure 12-1/4 inches x 3-3/8 inches.

These particular brake assemblies are designed for 9,000-10,000 pound Dexter axles, so they will work great whether you actually have a 9,000 pound or 10,000 pound axle on the trailer. To ensure they will fit perfectly, you can take a couple of quick measurements on your existing drum to verify they are 12-1/4 inches in diameter and 3-3/8 inches wide. These brakes also use a 7 bolt mounting flange bolt pattern. You can check to make sure the mounting flange on your axle uses 7 bolts. This kit will include both the Left Hand and Right Hand assembly.

As far as the actual capacity on your trailer, I recommend going with the 18.000 pound total/9,000 pound per axle listing that you found on the trailer ID tag. While the axles themselves may be rated at 10,000 pounds (which does indeed appear to be the case based on my research), there is likely some other component, such as the hubs or tires, that limits the true capacity to 9,000 pounds per axle. You will want to follow this lower capacity when loading the trailer.
