Troubleshooting Hayes Lemmerz Energise III Brake Controller Problem

Question:

Towing vehicle 05 hilux. I have the Hayes lemmerz energise III controller. Whilst towing my trailer I apply my brakes and the trailer brake doesnt work but if I use the manual slide option the brakes apply. I have adjusted the gain dial whilst driving but it doesnt work. Please help this confused person.

The first thing I'd check is the wire coming from the brake switch. It sounds like you aren't getting the signal when you hit the brakes. You can check this wire for function using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. This wire (normally red) should be cold when you are not hitting your brake pedal, but should be hot when you hit the pedal. If it remains cold, replace the wire between the controller and the brake pedal switch. Test that, and let me know if we need to do more troubleshooting. I've attached a couple article to help.

Since you are getting the manual override to work, we know your brake output wire is functioning correctly, so that leads me to believe that the wiring into the controller is at fault or the controller itself may need replaced.
