Weight Distribution for Dump Trailer with 8 Inch Tall I-Beam Frame

Question:

I do have the 2 1/2 " receiver . The trailer is rated at 16k lbs with the coupler it has. The trailer weighs 4650 lbs. So total payload capacity is 11,350 lbs. So I guess the 1600 lb tongue weight .

I do have a great option for you but a Reese system is not going to be the best choice in this case. You will need to box the trailer frame where the weight distribution brackets will go by having steel plates welded on.

What you can use is an Equal-I-zer system, # EQ37120ET as an example, and then add 2 outer link plates, # EQ90-02-5378, sold in quantities of 1, and 2 inner link plates, # EQ90-02-5208, also sold in quantities of 1. That would allow you to use the system on an 8 inch tall frame. Current pricing is available on all of the product pages.

The system mentioned above is rated for 800 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight. There are other systems with different weight ratings. To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

I have included some helpful links on determining tongue weight and weight distribution for you.

The Reese Titan Weight Distribution w/out Shank - Trunnion Bar - 17,000 lbs GTW, 1,700 lbs TW Item # RP66006 is a great option for you. This system is rated for 1,000 to 1,700 pounds tongue weight. This system also has frame brackets that mount 30 inches back along the frame measured from the center of the ball cavity in the trailer coupler. The brackets are 5-1/2 inches wide so the frame will have to be boxed in that area. A professional welder could weld on some steel plates in those locations turning the I-Beam into a box frame. The shank is sold separately so you can use # RP54976 or # RP54977. And for a properly sized ball that fits this system use # 63840.
