Recommended Roof Rack and Surfboard Carrier for 2017 Toyota 4Runner With OEM Roof Rack
Question:
I am a surfer and need to get racks for my 2017 4 runner. It has factory installed racks with cross bars. Those are not sufficient for side by side boards and they are not far enough forward on the roof. The roof appears to have a the ability to move the racks forward on tracks in the roof. Is this possible? Once I have these moved forward, I will need to buy two thule cross bars with the attachments. So the question is can the side racks be moved forward and is this something that I need to take it to the dealer to get done? Thank you for your help.

The OEM roof rack on your 2017 Toyota 4Runner is adjusted by sliding them along the rails and locking them into place with thumb screws. You should be able to easily move them out of the way or remove them if you would rather use a Thule roof rack system. You will not need to take it to the dealer.
The best Thule roof rack option for your 4Runner would include the WingBar Evo Bars, part # TH711400 for Silver or part # TH711420 for Black, and the Foot Pack # TH710401. You can add locks to this system with part # TH450400.
For a surfboard carrier I recommend going with the Inno Locker Watersport Carrier w/ Crossbar Pads # INA446. This carrier can hold p to 3 short surfboards, 2 windsurf boards, or 2 long surfboards. It also comes with high-density foam to help you protect your boards and secures them with straps that have adjustable pads and a rubber coating. This carrier also comes with locks to help deter theft of your boards.
I have attached a review video that you can check out for more information.
