The Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5G offers cushioning for a smoother ride and is the most popular fifth wheel to gooseneck adapter we offer, with the other standard option being the Ranch Hitch Universal Adapter # AM3100. Keep in mind that not all trailers are rated for use with these adapters, so you would need to contact your trailer's manufacturer to find out.

Before choosing any adapter, there will be a couple of measurements you need to take, starting with the correct height for your adapter. To do this, position your 1996 F-250 and trailer into position as if you were hooking up to tow (make sure you are on level ground). Measure from the bottom of the pin box to the top of the hitch ball, and that will tell you the height your adapter needs to be. The Convert-A-Ball measures between 12" and 16" while the Ranch Adapter measures between 11-3/4" and 14-3/4". You would also want to make sure you have five or six inches of clearance between the overhang of your trailer and your F-250's side rails.

If your F-250 has a bed under eight feet, you may need the offset versions of the adapters, which is Convert-A-Ball # CAB-C5GX1216 or Ranch Hitch # AM3139. To determine if you need an offset, first take the width of your trailer and divide it by two. Then measure from your gooseneck ball to the back of your cab. If the first measurement was not at least four inches more than the second, you would need an offset. For example, if your trailer has a width of 96 inches, and you divide by that by two you'd get 48; add four inches to get 52. That means the length from the gooseneck ball to the cab would need to be at least 52 or you'd need an offset.

If you go with the Ranch Adapter, it is recommended that you use the Slide Hammer # AM3103 to make installation easier. I have also added links to videos on these products as well as an article on adapters which you may find useful.
