Parts Needed to Convert Tandem Boat Trailer from Surge Brakes to Electric Drum Brakes
Question:
Hi Folks, I want to remove my surge brakes on my tandem axle boat trailer and put electric brakes. It has 10 inch 21/4 brakes. I want to get new drums and brakes, prior drums were HD1377-10. I would need a new 2inch coupler to remove the surge brake coupler and then A 7way plug to convert it over. Do you guys have a complete kit or can you recommend some parts. My truck already has an electric brake controller. I assume I would also need a break away box.

We can help you with the parts you need to convert your trailer from surge brakes to electric brakes. While there is not a single all-inclusive kit we have the items and resources you'll need to make this conversion. I suggest that as a starting point you check out the linked article that covers all the items needed for adding electric brakes to an existing trailer.
Your surge coupler can either be replaced or you can simply drill through it horizontally and put a bolt through it to prevent compression; then it will act like a standard coupler. If you prefer to replace it you can refer to the linked page for couplers; just select the type you need, straight tongue or a-frame.
For wiring you'll need a 7-way kit like # HS381-9000. This will give you the 7-way plug and a junction box where you can splice in the existing trailer wiring. You will also need 10-gauge brake wire # 10-1-1 to wire the brakes. For a breakaway kit you can use # 20400.
New hub/drums can be select based on the bearings in your existing hubs. The new ones need to use the same inner and outer bearings to ensure they will fit on your spindles. Our hub page is linked for you; choose hubs based on the bearings, the axle weight rating and the wheel bolt pattern of your wheels, such as the common 5-on-4-1/2 pattern found on an item such as # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K.
Electric brakes should also be selected to match the axle weight capacity and the brake flange mounting pattern, typically 4-bolt with a 10-inch brake. Our page for electric brakes is linked too.
