If the display on your Draw-Tite Activator Brake Controller, part # 5504, shows the letters OL,or Overload Code, that is an indication that there is a short in the Blue wire circuit. The Blue wire supplies power from the controller back to the trailer connector and to the brakes.

You will want to inspect the Blue wire connection at the brake controller and at the back of the 7-way on the back of your vehicle. You will also want to inspect the inside of the vehicle side connector and trailer connector as there may be corrosion causing a bad connection.

You can also test for signal with a multi-meter, part # PT89ZR, at the back of the 7-way at the 5 o clock position when looking at the connector from the back of the vehicle.

If you find everything on the vehicle is good, you will want to inspect the trailer. Check the trailer connector for corrosion in the connector, and also inspect the wiring for any shorts. You will then want to inspect the brake assembly to make sure the brake magnets are not worn down and there are windings or lines on the magnet, which could be causing a short.

I have linked instructions for the Draw-Tite Activator Brake Controller, part # 5504, and an FAQ on brake controllers.
