Items Required for Towing Travel Trailer with 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Question:

I recently bought a 2013 Equinox Lt. I am looking g at getting a travel trailer. I am not sure what one would be best trailer to get? I noticed the tow weight of 1500 with brakes and 1000 without. If I had a pop up or a light weight trailer that weighed more could it be towed if it is under the combined weight?

The Equinox with the 2.4L engine does have a towing capacity of 1000-lbs, or 1500-lbs if the trailer has brakes. This is what GM says the vehicle can tow and you do not ever want to exceed the rated capacity for the vehicle.

If the trailer you select does not have brakes then you need only a 4-pole wiring harness for the lights on the trailer. You can use Curt part # 56094 for the easiest plug-in installation, or if you want a harness that will protect the vehicle wiring from overloads or shorts from the trailer instead use part # 118494. Install videos for both wiring kits are linked.

Towing also requires a hitch, ball mount and hitch ball. For a hitch you can use # e98865 from etrailer. For the other components I suggest using our Ball Mount Kit # 989900 which includes two ball mounts and two hitch balls for towing flexibility.

If you select a trailer that has electric brakes then the Equinox will need either 4-pole harness above plus kit # ETBC7 along with a brake controller like the popular P2 # 90885.

The most popular accessory to add to a tow vehicle to help reduce the stress of pulling a trailer is a transmission cooler like # D13503 which provides supplemental cooling to further reduce the transmission's operating temperature.
