How Is Crossbar Spread for Roof Racks Determined

Question:

I have this rack mounted to a 2015 Ram Crew Cab at the recommended 29 17/64 inch spread. My question is why wouldnt I spread the bars as far as possible? The channel in the door frame easily accommodates a larger spread 36inch plus so wouldnt my load in this case a kayak be more stable with the racks spread as wide as possible?

The roof rack manufacturers designate where the crossbars of their racks need to be on the vehicles based on where the roof is the strongest. It may seem just as easy to move the bars of # RR32GR but we can't recommend you do that as it may move the bars to a weak spot on the roof.
