Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch - 2008 BMW X5 # 13077 is a popular option for your 2008 BMW X5. We even have a video showing installation on a 2008 X5 which I have linked for you.

For a wiring harness I recommend ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit # 119250KIT because with it you will not have to cut and splice into the vehicle wires. The ZCI harness is still a universal fit item but it has connectors that clamp around the vehicle tail light wiring rather than having to splice in. I have linked a video showing an example installation on a newer X5.

I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
