Does Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller Have a Trailer Weight Capacity
Question:
Im looking to buy a brake controller. The Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller seems to be a good fit. I have a 2011 Sierra 1500 with a towing package and a higher gear ratio rear end hauling a 36foot camper with an average weight of 9500 lbs. The Primus IQ states that it has a braking setting for up to 40 more than the weight of the towing vehicle. My camper is more than this. Will the Primus IQ brake controller still work?

The Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller # TK90160 referenced in your question is a great choice and will work without issue to activate the brakes on your 36 foot camper. The boost setting chart as it relates to the gross trailer weight that you mentioned simply refers to a recommended setting. The boost feature will give you more initial braking power for heavier loads and trailers. Since your camper is on the heavier side, you most likely would benefit from a higher boost setting. The Primus itself does not have a trailer weight capacity and it will handle the weight of your trailer just fine.
Since your Sierra has the factory tow package, you will just connect the wiring from the brake controller itself to the wiring already present under the dash in your vehicle.
This is an excellent proportional controller that will activate the trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Sierra. It features an easy-to-read LED display and continuous diagnostic checks that will alert you to any potential issues.
I have attached the installation details for you to check out.
