Installation of Brake Controller and 12 Volt Power Wires on a 2010 Dodge Journey

Question:

When installing a brake controller and installation kit on a 2010 Dodge Journey, should I attach my wires to the battery terminals or the jumpstart post that are in the engine compartment?

We recommend attaching the power wires to the battery terminals directly, through a correctly sized circuit breaker, to protect the vehicle wiring. When installing the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, connecting in this manner keeps any short circuit situation from causing problems with the vehicles sensitive wiring and computers.

If the battery is in the rear of the vehicle you will need to run the power wire from the brake controller back to the battery, but will have a much shorter run for the 12 volt power wire in the trailer connector.

We have detailed instructions for installation of a brake controller with the # ETBC7 kit online, see link.

You might want to consider a proportional brake controller, like the Tekonsha Voyager, item # 39510. Proportional controllers brake the trailer in proportion to the speed in which the vehicle is slowing, and will help reduce wear on the vehicle and trailer brakes. Proportional systems are much better in emergency braking situations also. Time delayed controllers brake at the same, user set, intensity no matter how fast the vehicle is stopping and tend to be harder on the trailer and vehicle braking systems.
