Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2012 Ford Explorer without Factory Tow Package
Question:
what if the vehicle, 2012 Ford Explorer does not have the tow package installed? is this connector there to plug into?

Expert Reply:
If your 2012 Ford Explorer did not come with the factory tow package then there is no guarantee that the proper connector will be present on the vehicle or, if it is, that it is active. The safe option then is to use a harness that will work with models that do not have the factory tow package such as # HM40285.
You could then add a 7-Way and retain the use of the 4-Way by installing # ETBC7. And if a brake controller is needed I recommend the P2 # 90885 because it is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. I have included some links that show and explain the ETBC7 installation for you.
