Fifth Wheel Rail Kit and Hitch Recommendation for 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500 Short Bed

Question:

I have a 2001 Silverado Crew Cab 6.5foot box. I am looking at a Cougar 5th wheel..shipping weight is about 10,500lb and carry capacity is about 2265lb...hitch 2180lb It has a Lippert 1621 pin box. I assumed because I do not have an 8foot box I needed a slider. Dealer says the cougar pin box does not need a slide on a 6.5foot box. If fact with that pin box and a slider that it may slide to far back and hit my tail gate. Can you please assist in a hitch and rail kit that is custom fit NOT universal. There is a plethora on your site. Thanks!!!

There are a few trailers on there on the market that are designed with narrow noses so that you can tow them without needing a slider hitch. If you are buying one (Cougar does have this option so the dealer is telling you the truth most likely), I would recommend a stationary hitch. It'll be lighter and less noisy due to fewer moving parts.

For a rail kit a custom install kit is the way to go as it will minimize drilling and install time. For that you would want the Reese kit # RP50064-58 which is a custom fit.

The Reese hitch part # RP30047 then would be an excellent option as it is cushioned and has a great jaw design.
