Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2011 Chevy Silverado with 5.3 Liter Engine  

Question:

I have a 2010 chevy silverado 5.3 litre hd trailer package.towing my 6300 pound trailer up a very long hill made the temp climb to 116 derees celcius should I be worried and should I use manual mode for towing or just put it in drive ,I had it in manual mode.

The optimum temperature for transmission fluid is between 160 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit (70 to 93 degrees Celsius) so at 240 (116 Celsius) you were definitely above that range. When towing up a high at low speeds using a low gear or towing mode, if available, would be the correct way to go about towing the trailer.

I would recommend adding a transmission cooler to your 2010 Chevy Silverado. I would use a class III or higher cooler rated for at least 6,000 pounds. You can use # D13503 or # D13504 with fitting # D13035. I have included a link to our FAQ article on transmission coolers and a video showing a typical installation for reference.
